Museo Tecnico Navale della Marina Militare, Viale Giovanni Amendola, 1
The Museo Tecnico Navale della Marina Militare, inaugurated in 1958 in La Spezia, is located next to the naval base and covers an area of about 3,000 square meters, including an inner garden. It traces the history of navigation through models, maps, photographs, and historical documents.
Highlights of the collection include figureheads from the 15th to 17th centuries—among them the legendary “Atalanta,” a mysterious wooden sculpture said to enchant those who gaze at it too long—along with ship models, historic naval weapons, cannons, and the explosive motorboat. The museum also features the radio station used by Guglielmo Marconi in 1897 for his early experiments. A library within the museum holds rare historical volumes and original documents, including Giuseppe Garibaldi’s service record. In the garden, visitors can see a bronze monument to Costanzo Ciano by sculptor Francesco Messina, a propeller from the battleship Vittorio Veneto, and part of the hull from Marconi’s ship Elettra.
Days and hours with reduced admission: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM; Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
