MOSTRA INTERNAZIONALE D’ARTE CINEMATOGRAFICA LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA
PROFILE OF THE EXCELLENCE
The Venice International Film Festival is the annual film festival held in Italy, in the historic Palazzo del Cinema on the Lungomare Marconi and in nearby venues on the Lido of Venice and throughout the lagoon. The Festival aims to promote the appreciation and dissemination of international cinema in all its forms – as art, entertainment and industry – in a spirit of freedom and dialogue.
A special section is dedicated to the restoration of classic films, enhancing the understanding of cinema history, particularly for younger audiences.
THE EXCELLENCE WITHIN THE VILLAGGI ITALIA AND VILLAGGI IN ITALIA
Starting with the Los Angeles stop of the Vespucci Tour – the homeland of the Oscars – the Villaggio Italia presented a rich programme of events celebrating Italian cinema around the world.
Screenings of some of the most acclaimed films of recent years were accompanied by tributes to great masters such as Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone, as well as talks exploring the history and international role of the seventh art, of which the Venice International Film Festival remains a globally recognised symbol.
Films screened during the various stops included:
“Comandante” by E. De Angelis (2023)
The story of Salvatore Todaro, a submarine commander in the Italian Royal Navy who, during the Second World War, defied orders to save 26 enemy sailors, navigating on the surface until reaching safety. For him, the law of the sea prevailed over the law of war.
“Io Capitano” by M. Garrone (2023)
The adventurous journey of Seydou and Moussa, two young men leaving Dakar to reach Europe – a contemporary odyssey through deserts, detention centres and the sea. Academy Award nominee for Best International Feature Film.
“Felicità” by M. Ramazzotti (2023)
The story of Desirè, a young woman trapped in a dysfunctional family where parents and children are bound by an oppressive relationship. An intense reflection on the illusion of happiness and the pursuit of freedom.
“La parte del leone” by B. Etchegaray (2023)
A documentary retracing eighty editions of the Venice Film Festival through interviews, archive footage and historical moments that mirror Italy’s cultural evolution.
“Ennio” by G. Tornatore (2021)
An intimate and profound portrait of Maestro Ennio Morricone, from his collaborations with Sergio Leone to his Academy Award for The Hateful Eight, enriched by interviews and exclusive material.
“Sergio Leone – L’italiano che inventò l’America” by F. Zippel (2022)
A documentary paying tribute to Sergio Leone, a legend of world cinema, through testimonies and rare footage revealing his revolutionary impact on film language.
