Mano d’Opera

“MANO D’OPERA”: the history and evolution of the key professions in Italian opera through the experiences of the workers behind the scenes in some of Italy’s most renowned opera theaters.

Costume designers, set designers, electricians, tailors, makeup artists, set technicians, lighting designers, and sound designers: these are some of the professional figures who work behind the curtain, essential for staging theatrical and operatic performances. These highly specialized and skilled professions often remain in the shadows, while the audience only witnesses the grandeur of the final result in the major productions of Italy’s leading theaters, unaware of the great and relentless effort that precedes the opening of the curtain.
These artisanal skills accompany and make possible the work of the performers on stage – actors, singers, musicians, dancers, extras, and figurants – giving tangible form to the imaginative ideas of directors, set designers, and librettists.
Through these testimonies, we reveal the “invisible” professions that work out of sight of the audience.
The docuseries is structured into 5 episodes, each lasting about 18 minutes.
An initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, directed by Stefano Di Buduo and Alessio Lavacchi, with a screenplay by Giovanni Ortoleva.
Produced by the Florentine production company Berta Film, with Carolina Pezzini, Stefano Mutolo, and Raika Khosravi.
